Photo Gallery: A History of the National Enquirer | Newsweek Politics | Newsweek.com

Recently the National Enquirer has been responsible for a number of scoops. Should we and the mainstream media continue to dismiss the tabloid, perhaps at our own peril? This photo journal shows just far (for good or ill) this newspaper has come.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Besides the journalistic qualities of the NE, I'd be interested in hearing your favorite headlines from any of the tabloids over the years.

From the Weekly World News "97 Pound Weakling Gives Birth to 79 Pound Monster!". This was from 1987 or so, which may have been the WWN's heyday.

The cover shows a picture (probably stock) of a skinny woman. The picture next to it (obviously unrelated but so what?) shows the most disgusting overweight not-recently-born baby who may have indeed already weighed 79 pounds, but I doubt it.

I love the dyslexia of the title as well.
